
Senior outside hitter Carlos Benavides, #14, is March’s Athlete of the Month for boys volleyball. Known for his athleticism and competitiveness, Carlos is in his fourth year on the team and says his favorite part of the sport is simply winning. A highlight of his career was traveling to Catalina for CIF playoffs. Head coach Cade McGee explained, “Carlos has been an essential part of our team this year. As a senior, he has led with both skill and integrity, setting the standard as our captain. Game after game, he’s consistently led in kills, with an offensive presence that’s unmatched by any opponent. Beyond his talent on the court, Carlos brings a competitive spirit and a positive character that elevates everyone around him.” Inspired by Kobe Bryant, Carlos brings passion and intensity to every match.
Senior outfielder Kevin Jeon leads the varsity baseball team with a .426 batting average, .512 on-base percentage, and 6 home runs, earning him the title of March Athlete of the Month. With 11 years of baseball experience, Kevin says his favorite part of the game is being part of a team and recalls playing in the state semifinals as a top memory. Head coach Jimmy Zurn calls Kevin “an outstanding young man” and praises his work ethic. Kevin will play at Boston College next year and looks up to MLB star Julio Rodríguez.
A dominant swimmer for over a decade, senior Lincoln Jones has been named March Athlete of the Month. He currently holds 7 of the school’s 11 boys’ swimming records and helped break the 400 Free Relay record at CIF. Lincoln enjoys competing in relays and looks up to Michael Phelps for his drive and discipline. Head coach Sarah Zurn commented, “Lincoln is an incredibly hard worker, he is one of the best swimmers we’ve had at La Mirada High School.” He will continue his swimming career at Concordia University.
Senior Angelie Kennedy has earned March Athlete of the Month for her standout season on the softball field. A catcher and outfielder with 12 years of experience, she hit over .400 in March with a .600 average with runners in scoring position, 4 home runs, and 10 RBIs. Head coach Brent Tuttle stated, “Angelie has really come into her own this season. Her leadership and work ethic set the tone for our team.” Angelie will continue her softball career at Harding University and is inspired by Olympic catcher Aubrie Monroe.
