Kayla Han wins CIF State in 500 Freestyle

La Mirada High School swimmer Kayla Han put together one of the greatest seasons in school history this spring, making history for the Matadores at both the CIF Southern Section and CIF State Championships.

Competing at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Finals, Han won two individual CIF-SS championships in dominant fashion, capturing both the girls 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle titles while setting new meet records in each event.

Han first claimed the CIF-SS title in the 200 IM with a record-breaking performance of 1:59.74, becoming the first swimmer in Division 4 history to break the two-minute mark in the event. Later in the meet, she returned to the pool and delivered another historic swim in the 500 freestyle, winning in a meet-record time of 4:46.43.

Her performances not only helped elevate the La Mirada Girls swim program on the Southern California stage, but also placed her name in the history books as one of the most accomplished swimmers ever to compete for LMHS.

Following her CIF-SS success, Han advanced to the CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships in Clovis, California, where the top swimmers from across the state gathered to compete at the highest level of high school swimming.

Kayla Han finished 3rd Place at CIF State in the 200 Individual Medley

At the state meet, Han once again proved she belonged among California’s elite. Competing in the same two events — the 200 IM and 500 freestyle — she earned a first-place finish in the 500 Freestyle against one of the fastest fields in the country while also turning in a strong performance in the 200 IM, finishing 3rd in the State. Her times this season in the 200 IM, 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle also qualified for NISCA All-American Automatic.

Han’s success carries even more meaning because of the history she made for La Mirada High School along the way. Her CIF championships, meet records, and state-level performances marked a major milestone for the LMHS swim program and brought statewide recognition to the Matadores.

A longtime swimmer with La Mirada Armada, Han has spent years developing into one of California’s top swimmers through countless hours of training and competition. This season, all of that hard work paid off as she helped put La Mirada swimming on the map in a way the program has never seen before.

From breaking records at CIF-SS to standing on the podium at the CIF State Championships, Kayla Han’s 2026 season will be remembered as one of the defining athletic accomplishments in La Mirada High School history.
