Since the addition as a CIF-sanctioned sport, Girls Flag Football has grown in the Southern Section to 270 schools fielding teams. The La Mirada High School Flag Football team gained several athletes this school year, fielding a Varsity as well as a Junior Varsity squad. The team has gained a record of 3-2. The varsity team won their first few games against Sunny Hills High School, John Glenn, and Magnolia High School. Coach Mo Helwani, feels that the success of the team makes him feel like he is “doing something right” given the new opportunities available for the team this season. Helwani explained that the reason that he took up a job coaching the girls was due to the passion that he has for the sport. He added, “I want this to be a good and healthy environment for them to play in.” The team lost their game against California High School by a score of 16-25 on September 4, making their overall currently 3-2. The Matadores take on La Habra at La Habra on Monday, September 9, with JV at 5p.m. and Varsity at 6p.m.
