The Associated Student Body held a remembrance event on Wednesday, September 11 in the gym at La Mirada High School. Geraldine Aiono began by singing the “Star Spangled Banner” in front of the staff and students. Next, Officer Mary Cipres spoke about her experiences and the emotions as a law enforcement officer. After, Lilia Chastine, mother of students Ruby, Elizabeth and Sarah, spoke to the gym. For the first time, Chastine shared her story working as a flight attendant for United Airlines and ultimately having her shift switched from United 93 on September 11, 2001 to returning back to Los Angeles on September 10 to be home for her father’s birthday. Her story was emotional and gripping to the entire group listening.
Junior Savanna Ramos shared, “ Hearing and watching all these stories is heartbreaking, I can’t believe how quickly a day can go from being normal to one of the saddest days in history.” Many students felt impacted by the assembly held, they were able to hear the stories of how this tragedy changed our lives. We will continue to show our respect and sympathy to those who were highly affected by this massacre.
