The Homecoming game was at home, played against Downey on October 4th, from 7 pm to 9:30 pm. The game started strong but as the continued their plays, Downey gained a strong lead. Coach Mealy noted, “I’d like to continue to see how we battled in the first half. I thought we did some things really well in the first half. Executing the game plan and battling. So if we can piggyback off that first half then that would be something I would like to see further next game.” The ending score was 45 to 7 a loss for the Matadores. “We did well in the first half but I feel we lost momentum going into the second half and that’s why we lost,” commented Sophomore player Fernando Orozco shared. He added, “Some strengths we had were that our team came together to rally and put up a good fight against a good team that we were not expected to win against.”
During halftime, the homecoming queen was revealed. Senior Geraldine Aiono won as this year’s homecoming queen. She explained, “I gained a sense of gratitude, and am just grateful I was able to have this experience for myself and especially for my culture [Polynesian people]. I feel like winning homecoming queen, helped me show out for my culture and people.”
Angelina Ratzlaff described her experience on the court, “I just wanted to make as many high school memories as possible, and I saw it as an opportunity. Also, my friends were doing it, so I was just motivated by them and just making memories.”
