Chromokopia an album by Tyler, the Creator
Chromokopia is the latest studio album from American rapper, singer songwriter, and producer Tyler, the creator. After his last album, “Call me if you get lost” which won rap album of the year at the Grammys, Tyler once again bends genres together creating a new atmosphere for this album. The opening song “St. Chroma” that features vocals from Daniel Caesar has a beat that seems to imitate soldiers marching that ends up building up to an explosion or a sort of awakening and lyrics that cover what sounds like the little bit of self doubt Tyler might still have in himself. The third track, “Noid” explores how with his fame his sense of security has been lowered with paranoia being a common feeling for him. The next track “Darling, I” featuring Teezo Touchdown has production that is reminiscent of Pharrell, and talks about how the fulfillment Tyler feels from creating art out weighs his fulfillment from relationships. The song “Hey Jane” tells a story from the perspective of a male and female experiencing the potential of parenthood. The male (presumably Tyler) faces anxiety and fearing the responsibility of becoming a father. Two tracks later you are hit with a very revolutionary song “Judge Judy” this song is very reminiscent of a Prince song. This song tells a story about Tyler and a woman sending letters to each other but ends with telling us the woman actually died from internal illness, this song also has vocals from Childish Gambino. “Take Your Mask Off” is a song that references people who live these fake lives with a “mask” over their face hiding who they truly are and Tyler reflects on himself doing the same thing in verse 4. The following track, “Tomorrow” has Tyler visiting how he and everyone else are aging, how his mothers hands aren’t the same as they once were, and he himself isn’t the same as he once was. Tyler tackles himself questioning and wondering about his absent father on the track “Like Him”, the title is a reference to the chorus where he asks if he looks like and resembles his father. The album ends with the track “I Hope You Find Your Way Home”, which is a song where Tyler reflects on himself and his growth through his life.
Chromokopia overall, an album about self reflection, Tyler, the creator examines his growth, worries, and the complexities he faces and has faced in his life. This is an album that deserves a listen and seems to have something for everyone.
