The CIF southern section championship game for our Lady Matadors Basketball team was played on Feb. 28th at 2:00 pm, against the Pilibos. The girls made school history by making it to the CIF championships this year. The final score was 40 – 55.
“CIF was an awesome humbling experience. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to win our last CIF game but I’m very proud of each and every one of the girls,” expressed assistant Coach Timothy Yanez who has been with our Lady Matadors for the past four years. Sharing his thoughts on the lessons that could be learned from the girl’s CIF experience.
Jodin Shaw also shared her thoughts on the last CIF game and her overall experience. She said, “I feel obviously disappointed and that’s not what we wanted to happen. But we are so proud of each other and were glad we got that opportunity.” “I think we’ve improved a lot because last year we didn’t make it that far, we only made it to the semifinals, and I think that gave us the motivation because we knew we had a chance to get there and we did and we just need to work on the little things that we haven’t been doing all season. But we did good overall.”
Jael Arreguin added, “I think it was a great experience. I think that it’s important to recognise we’ve made it to the championship because that’s never been done in school history for girls basketball. But I think it was a great experience for myself as im trying to go play college basketball.” Sharing her thoughts on the championship and her plans after high school.
“I feel confident but I’m also nervous. I feel that we can get really far in the game. I think it is going to be a close game, but I still feel confident we can make it through,” shared Emily Gonzoles, revealing her thoughts for the upcoming state games.
Overall, the girls worked hard for the past four years to make school history. The game was a hard loss but the girls will continue to work and play hard as they advance to state.
