La Mirada High School recently had its yearly Credit Crunch Day, a special event designed to
emphasize academic progress and accountability among students. On this day, the school had
a modified schedule that lengthened the fifth period while shortening all other class periods.
This change lets students receive more attention from their fifth-period teachers, do activities to
increase their grades, and discuss their graduation requirements. The initiative aimed to
motivate students to take ownership of their education while ensuring they understood the
importance of maintaining good standing with their credits.
One of the highlights of Credit Crunch Day was the distribution of official transcripts to all
students. These transcripts had a detailed summary of each student’s grades, credits earned,
and their progress toward meeting graduation requirements. Their 5th period teacher guided
students through understanding their transcripts, pointing out areas of strength and identifying
subjects where improvement was needed. This transparency allowed students to see where
they stood academically and what steps they needed to take to stay on track for graduation.
The extended fifth period served as a dedicated time for students to ask questions, seek
clarification, and set goals for the remainder of the semester. Teachers used this time to discuss
academic concerns, provide tips for bettering grades, and offer additional support. For some
students, this period was needed, as it showed the importance of addressing low grades or
recovering missing credits.
Parents were also involved in this, as students were required to bring their signed transcripts
back to school. This step made sure that families were aware of their child’s grades and could
take an active role in supporting their educational goals. By bridging the communication gap
between school and home, Credit Crunch Day fostered a collaborative approach to student
success. Parents appreciated the opportunity to see their child’s progress and discuss future
plans, including college or career aspirations.
Overall, Credit Crunch Day was a valuable experience for students, teachers, and parents alike.
It showed the importance of responsibility and provided students with a clear picture of where
they are academically. The longer fifth period offered an opportunity for personalized support,
while the parent-signed transcripts strengthened the connection between school and home. By
dedicating a day to focus on academic progress, La Mirada High School demonstrated its
commitment to helping students succeed and preparing them for life beyond high school.
