Sarah Chastine has earned Athlete of the Month honors for March after putting together a breakout stretch in the pool for La Mirada.
In just her second year of swimming, the sophomore has made major strides in the 100 breaststroke—one of the most technical events in the sport. This season, she’s dropped more than nine seconds from last year, hitting a personal best of 1:22.59, which is already a CIF consideration time.
“Sarah has been an integral part of our varsity team,” Head Coach Sarah Zurn said. “She has continued to improve, especially in the 100 breaststroke. Her other times have been fast, and she contributes so much to the team for relays and other events.”
Chastine’s impact goes beyond her individual race. She’s been a reliable piece of the lineup all season, stepping up in relays and wherever the team needs her. That team-first mindset shows up in what she enjoys most about the sport—getting to be out there competing alongside her sisters.

One of her favorite memories so far came at league finals during her freshman year, and she’s clearly taken that experience and built on it this season.
She also looks up to her teammate Kayla Han, someone she sees as a role model in the local swim community. Being around that kind of example has helped push her to keep improving.
Outside of swim, Chastine plays water polo and enjoys watching football, staying active year-round.
For a sophomore still relatively new to the sport, Sarah’s growth has been hard to miss. Her work ethic, consistency, and willingness to do whatever the team needs made her an easy choice for March Athlete of the Month.
