La Mirada High School sophomore swimmer Elizabeth Chastine has earned Athlete of the Month honors for April after an outstanding finish to the regular season and a strong performance at League Finals.
Competing primarily in the 50 freestyle, Chastine continued to improve throughout the season and delivered some of her best swims when it mattered most. At League Finals, she swam a lifetime best in the 50 Free and helped lead the Matadors to several top relay finishes. Chastine was part of the 200 Medley Relay team that swam its fastest time of the season, placed 2nd overall at League, and qualified for CIF. She also contributed to the 200 Free Relay team that placed 3rd overall at League and qualified for CIF, along with the 400 Free Relay team that also earned a 3rd-place finish.
Head coach Sarah Zurn praised Chastine for the dedication and work ethic she has shown all season long.
“She has been working so hard in practice to improve and it paid off,” Zurn commented. “She is such a motivating teammate and so coachable.”
Now in just her second year of swimming, Elizabeth has quickly become an important part of the La Mirada swim program. Her favorite part of the sport is making friendships with teammates, and one of her most memorable moments this season was competing alongside her Chastine sister relay team.
Outside of swimming, Chastine also plays water polo and enjoys watching the sport as a fan. Elizabeth continued her improvements and she contributed to two relays at CIF-SS at Mt. SAC May 5.
