The La Mirada High School Costume Contest has ended. An interview was conducted to see the process of creating a costume for the event so next year’s contest could have an idea on how it functions. The interview was conducted with a participant in the contest, senior Diego Tavera. Tavera participated in the contest as Miles Morales, The Prowler, from the 2023 film, SpiderMan: Across the Spider-Verse. While Tavera did not end up winning the contest, he still believed it was a “heart-warming experience” and did not regret trying to win. Tavera said he was asked numerous times by students to have pictures taken with them. Tavera’s favorite photo was with a student dressed as Matt Murdock from Daredevil. Notable judges that Tavera noticed were Mr. Stroup, Mrs. Grayson, and Mr. Crowell. A notable costume Tavera was most interested in were senior John Bynum’s Ghost from Call ofDuty: Modern Warfare 2, as he believed his costume to have “looked the sickest”. Other notable costumes were the Ice King from Fortnite, Dorothy Gale from The Wizard ofOz, and Richard Ramierz, who had a fake knife and jumpsuit however that made him look more like Micheal Myers to many students. Tavera also stated which costumes won certain categories. For the most scary category, the Ice King won, for the funniest costume, Samuel Snell’s Chef from The Muppets. For the best group costume, a Michelangelo and Rapheal duo from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles won. Finally, for the best overall costume, senior Adam Peralta’s King Dice from Cuphead was nominated, but a student dressed as the homeless man, who tore his shirt apart and put a cardboard sign that said, “any change?” and put a weave on with white hair and put on a marker to look dirty ultimately ended up winning.
