The La Mirada High School Varsity Football team opened up the newly reopened field for their first game at Goodman Stadium on Friday, August 30 at 7 p.m. The stadium had been under construction for almost six years leaving the Matadores to play several seasons at John Glenn High School and Excelsior Field. However, last Friday night was the night they get to play on their home turf. Gavin Dionne, a senior on the football team, shared that he is really excited and honored to be a part of the senior class to play on the field. He explained, “The last couple of senior classes weren’t able to play on the field, so I’m excited to be able to do that.” Dionne also believes the field will be a big motivation to the guys and team this season.
The school is hosted a tailgate event before the game with food trucks and Hawaiian shaved ice to bring more of the community together before the game. Approximately 4,000 fans attended the game to watch the Matadores play Western High School. The team lost the game and hosts Tesoro High School on September 6 at 7 p.m.
