This month’s Athlete of the Month is Genaro Gomez, a senior midfielder wearing #7 for the Matadores. With 13 years of playing experience, Gomez has been a steady and influential presence in the heart of the field, combining leadership, toughness, and high soccer IQ every time he steps on the pitch.
Gomez is known as the engine of the midfield—someone who never comes out of matches, even when banged up, and always stays mentally sharp. He leads by example, putting the team first and doing whatever is needed to help his teammates succeed. Statistically, he’s made a huge impact this season, appearing in all 11 games while leading the team in goals and assists, proving his ability to both finish and create.
Gomez says his favorite part of soccer is that it’s a team sport and he gets to play with his friends, which shows in the way he looks
to set others up and make those around him better. His most memorable moment came when he traveled out of state and won a tournament with his team, a highlight that reflects both his love for competition and camaraderie.
A fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gomez admires his mentality, longevity, and character. After graduation, he plans to attend community college and continue playing soccer, keeping the door open for the next level.
Coach Phil Yovino summed it up best, calling Gomez, “the engine of our midfield,” praising his instincts, leadership, and commitment to making his teammates better. A great player and an even better teammate, Gomez continues to represent Matador Soccer with pride.
